Sama talks new areas of mineralization at Samapleu
Ivanhoe Electric holds a copper project with high-grade Santa Cruz and a low-grade nickel-copper exploration joint venture in West Africa.

Sama Resources, the operator of the 60/40 Ivanhoe Electric-led Samapleu nickel-copper project in Ivory Coast, has reported initial drilling results from 2026. At the new Zoupleu prospect, located 13 km from the Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) area, hole ZP-01 intersected 23.2 m of combined mineralized material. This interval included 6.3 m grading 0.13% Ni, 0.13% Cu, 0.01% Co, and 0.05 g/t Pt.
The release highlights broad intervals of minor disseminated sulphides and notes that mineralized ultramafics were intersected at three untested targets. A program expansion is planned to support a first global resource estimate by Q3 2026. To fund this growth, Sama sold its remaining Falcon stake for $9.9M.
Ivanhoe Electric Inc. (IE) is a $2B market-cap developer whose value is heavily tied to the Santa Cruz copper project, which features a PFS with 1.5 Mt contained Cu and an NPV of $1.4B. The company also holds the Samapleu Ni-Cu project, a small, early-stage asset within a JV.
The intercept reported was ultra-low grade, of tiny width, and showed no continuity. This result does not change the resource or thesis for Ivanhoe Electric. It is immaterial in dollar terms and does not de-risk the company’s growth.
The stock chart shows a steep decline from $27 to ~$12.80, driven by broader copper sentiment and earlier financing dilution. This news, coming from a minority interest exploration project, is unlikely to reverse the trend.
Ivanhoe Electric Inc. (IE) is a U.S.-focused critical minerals developer and explorer. Its flagship asset is the 100%-owned Santa Cruz Copper Project in Arizona, an underground operation featuring high-grade oxide and sulphide deposits. A preliminary feasibility study (PFS) has been completed, with first cathode production targeted for the first half of 2029.
The company’s portfolio also includes the Hog Heaven gold-copper-silver project in Montana, the Tintic project in Utah, and a 50/50 joint venture with Maaden in Saudi Arabia. Additional activities involve a BHP exploration alliance in the southwestern United States, a collaboration with SQM in Chile, and the Samapleu nickel-copper joint venture in Ivory Coast, in which Ivanhoe Electric holds a 60% stake and Sama Resources holds 40%.
Financially, Ivanhoe Electric holds $290 million in cash and has an undrawn $200 million bridge facility. It is also pursuing a pending EXIM loan of up to $825 million. The company’s market capitalization stands at approximately $2 billion.
