Teck Receives Highland Valley Copper Operations Strike Notice
Teck’s Highland Valley Copper strike notice tests operational resilience ahead of the Anglo American merger close.

Teck Resources Limited received a formal strike notice from the United Steelworkers (USW) Local 7619 at its Highland Valley Copper (HVC) Operations. The collective agreement expired on September 30, 2026, and the union is entitled to begin strike action as early as October 24, 2026, at 8:00 a.m. PT.
Teck confirms that HVC operations continue uninterrupted and that contingency plans are actively in place to maintain safety and environmental management during potential labor action. Management states a commitment to reaching a collective agreement that is fair to employees while supporting the ongoing viability of the operation.
Teck Resources Limited (TECK) faces a known labor risk following the expiration of its contract on September 30, marked by a recent strike notice. Operations remain active with contingency plans deployed, which significantly mitigates immediate production disruption and environmental liability.
The market’s reaction has been muted, with the stock declining approximately 1.6% from $90.51 on October 20 to $89.02 on October 21. Given the pending merger with Anglo American, which is expected to close imminently per September guidance, labor stability remains important. However, this development is considered a standard collective bargaining cycle event.
Teck Resources Limited (TECK) is a diversified mining company with major producing assets in copper, zinc, and premium iron ore. Its copper operations include Highland Valley Copper, Quebrada Blanca, Antamina, and Carmen de Andacollo. Zinc production comes from the Red Dog and Trail mines, while Antamina also serves as a source of premium iron ore as a byproduct.
The company is in the final stages of a "merger of equals" with Anglo American to form "Anglo Teck," which will be headquartered in Vancouver. The transaction is expected to create a top-5 global copper producer with greater than 70% copper exposure. Additionally, Teck is executing a strategic pivot toward critical minerals, highlighted by a Canada Growth Fund agreement to expand germanium, gallium, and antimony production at its Trail Operations.
