E3 Lithium Joins Consortium to Develop LMR Cathode Anchored by POSCO and the National Research Council of Canada
E3’s consortium deal with POSCO and NRC validates its next-generation cathode pathway.

E3 Lithium Ltd. (ETL) has entered a collaborative research agreement with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) and POSCO America Corporation to develop a lithium-manganese-rich (LMR) cathode. Under the terms of the partnership, E3 will serve as the exclusive provider of lithium carbonate from Canadian sources for the project. The initiative is funded by CA$98,798 from the NRC’s Critical Battery Materials Initiative.
The project involves a broader network of industry partners, including Manganese X Energy Corp. and NiVolt Technologies Inc., which are providing chemical precursors, while the NRC handles synthesis and testing. POSCO is responsible for industrial validation of the technology. LMR batteries are designed to offer increased energy density, safety, and cost savings, a technology currently being pursued by major automakers such as LG, Ford, and GM. POSCO has set a target of achieving one million tonnes of cathode capacity by 2030.
E3 Lithium Ltd. (ETL) has entered into a partnership that provides early-stage commercial validation for its battery-grade lithium carbonate, aligning the Clearwater Project with next-generation LMR cathode chemistry. The company will receive CA$98,798 in funding, a figure that is immaterial to overall project economics but signals institutional and industrial interest in the feedstock.
POSCO’s involvement adds credibility to the product's quality and future offtake potential, supporting the company's strategy to secure long-term supply agreements ahead of Final Investment Decision (FID). The news is incremental and expected within the critical minerals sector, as developers routinely partner with research bodies and battery manufacturers to qualify products. It does not alter the capital expenditure profile or timeline for the Clearwater Project.
E3 Lithium Ltd. (ETL) is a pre-revenue critical minerals company focused on the Clearwater Project in the Bashaw District of Alberta, Canada. The project utilizes proprietary Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technology to produce battery-grade lithium carbonate from brine resources.
The company’s Pre-Feasibility Study outlines a 1.13 million tonnes LCE proven and probable mineral reserve with a pre-tax NPV of USD $5.2 billion and a 29.2% IRR. Stage 1 production targets approximately 12,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate per year, with expansion potential up to 30,000 tonnes annually.
E3 Lithium is currently operating a demonstration facility, having successfully commissioned Phase 2 and preparing for Phase 3 operations to de-risk the technology at commercial scale.
