Standard Lithium Files Positive Preliminary Economic Assessment for the High-Grade 70,000 Tonnes Per Year Franklin Project in East Texas
Standard’s Franklin PEA validates project scale, though the stock languishes near multi-month lows amid first-investment decision execution risk.

Standard Lithium Ltd. and Equinor have filed a Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) for the Franklin Project in East Texas. The assessment outlines an economic profile featuring an unlevered pre-tax NPV8 of $5.9 billion, an internal rate of return (IRR) of 25.7%, and a three-year payback period. The project contemplates production of up to 70,000 tonnes per year of battery-quality lithium carbonate over a 20-year mine life.
The resource base has been expanded to 3.9 million tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE), comprising Indicated and Inferred resources, at an average lithium concentration of 515 mg/L. Ownership of the project remains split 55% to Standard Lithium and 45% to Equinor.
Next steps include advancing to a Preliminary Feasibility Study (PFS) targeted for completion in 2027, with initial production aimed for the early 2030s. The companies are also evaluating co-product opportunities for bromine, estimated at 50,000 tonnes per annum, and potash.
Standard Lithium Ltd. (SLI) released the Franklin Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA), a technical milestone that aligns with management’s prior guidance to publish the evaluation in the second half of 2026. The assessment confirms the high-grade nature of the East Texas assets and presents a robust economic case for future scaling.
The news is incremental to the maiden inferred resource announced in November 2025 and does not alter the critical path for the flagship South West Arkansas (SWA) project, which remains the primary near-term catalyst. The update follows a logical project development sequence and does not immediately impact cash flows or the 2029 SWA production timeline.
The stock has declined approximately 70% year-to-date despite a steady stream of positive operational and commercial updates. This indicates that market participants are pricing in execution risk, capital markets access, and macro lithium pricing weakness rather than rewarding incremental resource updates.
Standard Lithium Ltd. (SLI) is a pre-commercial, development-stage lithium exploration company focused on Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) from brine in the U.S. Its flagship South West Arkansas (SWA) Project is designed for an initial capacity of 22,500 tonnes per year of battery-quality lithium carbonate. A Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) was filed in September 2025, with a Final Investment Decision (FID) targeted for 2026. Construction is expected to start promptly thereafter, with first commercial production anticipated in 2029.
The company also holds the East Texas Portfolio, specifically the Franklin Project, which features a high-grade brine resource. A Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) for this project was filed in October 2026. The long-term goal for the Texas operations is to produce over 100,000 tonnes of lithium chemicals per year.
SLI’s DLE process has been validated at the Arkansas Demonstration Plant, which has processed over 1 million barrels of real brine. The facility has completed 15,000+ DLE cycles and achieved 95%+ lithium recovery with zero safety incidents over six years.
