Smackover Lithium Exceeds Targeted Customer Offtake Volumes for South West Arkansas Project

Standard secures 20kt offtake for its $1.1 billion Smackover project, de-risking financing ahead of final investment decision.

Executive Summary

Smackover Lithium, a 55/45 joint venture between Standard Lithium Ltd. and Equinor, has amended its binding offtake agreement with Trafigura Trading LLC. The amendment increases Trafigura’s maximum annual purchase option from 8,000 to 12,000 metric tonnes of battery-quality lithium carbonate.

Total project commitments now stand at 20,000 metric tonnes per year, comprising 12,000 metric tonnes from Trafigura and 8,000 metric tonnes from LG Energy Solution. This volume exceeds the initial target of securing roughly 80% (18,000 metric tonnes) of the 22,500 metric tonnes per year nameplate capacity. The amendment provides flexibility for Smackover to allocate the additional 4,000 metric tonnes to other strategic customers at its election.

With the offtake workstream substantially complete, management is pivoting to finalize a ~$1.1 billion senior secured debt financing package with three major Export Credit Agencies (ECAs). A Final Investment Decision (FID) is targeted for later in 2026, with commercial production expected in 2029.

Material Impact

Standard Lithium Ltd. (SLI) released its September 28, 2026 update, marking a logical, incremental step in the project's commercialization roadmap. This development follows the August 31, 2026 agreement with LG Energy Solution and the initial agreement with Trafigura in March 2026.

Securing 20,000 MT/year of binding commitments covers 89% of the nameplate capacity, a critical de-risking milestone for project finance lenders. Banks typically require 70-80% offtake coverage to syndicate a $1.1 billion senior secured facility.

The news does not introduce new valuation drivers or alter the fundamental capex, timeline, or technology profile established in the October 2025 Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS). It represents a routine, expected completion of a known gating item that aligns with management's stated Q3 2026 offtake closure target.

Company Overview

Standard Lithium Ltd. (SLI) is a pre-commercial, development-stage company focused on Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) from brine in the United States. Its flagship asset is the South West Arkansas (SWA) Project, operated via the Smackover Lithium JV, which targets 22,500 tonnes per annum of battery-quality lithium carbonate over a 20-year mine life. The company utilizes a proprietary DLE process optimized for the Smackover Formation, validated through a demonstration plant that has processed over 1 million barrels of brine and completed 15,000+ cycles with 95%+ lithium recovery.

Additionally, the company holds the Franklin Project in East Texas, which recently released a Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) outlining a $5.0 billion NPV and 24% IRR. This project targets up to 70,000 tonnes per year of lithium carbonate plus bromide and potash co-products.
