Nutrien Provides Update on Trinidad Nitrogen Operations
Nutrien indefinitely shuts the Trinidad mine with no disclosed closure charge and no impact on guidance.

Nutrien Ltd. (NTR) announced the indefinite shutdown of its Trinidad Nitrogen operations at the Point Lisas facility, citing an extensive review of strategic alternatives and engagement with relevant stakeholders. The company stated that ongoing natural gas constraints and uncertainty led management to determine the closure was the optimal path to enhance free cash flow and return on invested capital. This announcement formalizes a controlled shutdown already implemented on 23 October 2025, which was previously attributed to port access restrictions imposed by Trinidad and Tobago's National Energy Corporation (NEC) and a lack of reliable, economic natural gas supply.
Nutrien provided explicit guidance stating there will be no impact to its 2026 Nitrogen sales volume guidance, as the company assumed no production from its Trinidad Nitrogen operations. The company claimed it remains well positioned to meet customer demand for nitrogen and grow volumes from its North American Nitrogen assets through reliability improvements and low-cost debottleneck projects.
The release contained no financial quantification, including no book value, EBITDA or FCF contribution for Trinidad, impairment estimate, severance, remediation, or decommissioning figures, nor any timeline or cost for the transition. The statement was issued by Dean Perkins, Senior Vice President, Upstream, Nitrogen and Proprietary Product Operations; the CEO was not quoted. The decision date of 4 October 2026 falls after the 30 September 2026 fiscal quarter-end, which affects where any closure charge is recorded.
Nutrien Ltd. (NTR) issued an update regarding its Trinidad operations, confirming the indefinite shutdown of the facility. This action follows a controlled shutdown initiated on 21 October 2025 and aligns with previous strategic reviews of the asset disclosed in the Q3 2025, Q1 2026, and Q2 2026 releases. The exclusion of Trinidad from the 2026 nitrogen guidance was previously announced in the February 2026 guidance release and during the Q2 2026 earnings call.
The indefinite nature of the shutdown removes any optionality for restarting the asset. Nutrien has previously characterized the Trinidad facility as gas-constrained and dilutive to free cash flow.
In terms of production volume, prior-period context from the 21 October 2025 release indicates that Trinidad was producing approximately 85 kt/month of ammonia and 55 kt/month of urea. This equates to roughly 140 kt/month, or approximately 1.7 Mt/year of gross product. This figure is a derived estimate and not a restated figure from Nutrien. Against the FY2025 nitrogen volume midpoint of approximately 10.85 Mt, this represents roughly 15% of segment volume. However, this volume is effectively nil-margin and was already excluded from the FY2026 guidance range of 9.2–9.7 Mt. The decline in the nitrogen guide midpoint from approximately 10.85 Mt in FY2025 to approximately 9.45 Mt in FY2026 is consistent with a full year without Trinidad production, alongside the earlier cessation at New Madrid.
The market previously reacted to the underlying event. The original shutdown announcement on 21 October 2025 coincided with the stock falling from $80.81 on 20 October to $78.56 on 21 October, eventually reaching a 52-week low of $75.58 by 4 November 2025.
Nutrien has not quantified the free cash flow uplift from the shutdown. The company described the action as enhancing free cash flow and return on invested capital but provided no specific figures, leaving the verification of these benefits to future financial reports.
The release confirms no changes to volume guidance, earnings trajectory, capital returns, or the balance sheet. It resolves one of three strategic reviews but provides no incremental cash-flow disclosure.
Nutrien Ltd. (NTR) is a global crop inputs and services company operating three upstream fertilizer segments—potash, nitrogen, and phosphate—alongside the world’s largest agricultural retail distribution network.
In the potash segment, the Saskatchewan-based operation features low-cost, multi-mine assets. First-half 2026 production reached a record 7.66 million tonnes, with controllable cash costs remaining below $60 per tonne. Automation accounted for 53% of ore tonnes mined, while offshore sales are managed through Canpotex.
The nitrogen division comprises North American gas-based ammonia and urea assets, as well as the now-shuttered Trinidad facility. First-half 2026 ammonia production totaled 2.18 million tonnes, representing an 89% adjusted operating rate.
The phosphate segment is currently under strategic review. First-half 2026 adjusted EBITDA was $80 million, a 48% decline year-on-year driven by elevated sulfur costs.
Retail operations generated $1.24 billion in adjusted EBITDA for the first half of 2026, a 4% increase supported by proprietary product margins and Australian livestock markets.
Since the fourth quarter of 2024, Nutrien has pursued portfolio simplification. The company sold its 50% stake in Profertil S.A. for approximately $600 million pre-tax, with the transaction closing in December 2025. Since June 2026, roughly $90 million in additional non-core asset sale agreements have been signed, bringing total gross divestiture proceeds to approximately $1 billion. The Trinidad facility has been shut down rather than sold.
