Electra Battery Materials advances preliminary engineering for its $675 million US nickel refinery project as capital requirements remain a significant factor.

Electra Battery Materials Corporation (ELBM) announced preliminary engineering results (FEL-1) for a proposed two-phase nickel refinery in North America. The facility will use conventional hydrometallurgical processes, leveraging the company's existing Ontario cobalt refinery expertise. Site selection is based on a preferred location in the southeastern United States, subject to further assessment of feedstock, customers, utilities, and permitting.
Phase 1 targets approximately 20,000 tonnes per year of contained nickel, processing mine-derived feedstock and recycled battery black mass into battery-grade nickel sulfate and nickel metal. Preliminary capital estimates for Phase 1 range from US$530 million to US$675 million. Phase 2 could expand capacity by an additional 20,000 tonnes per year, adding cobalt, lithium, and graphite byproducts from battery black mass.
Next steps focus on advancing site assessment, permitting planning, and refining equipment and utility requirements to move toward FEL-3 and a potential development decision. The project aims to strengthen North American supply chains for industrial, military, and battery applications, reducing reliance on Chinese processing.

Electra Battery Materials Corporation is developing North America's first battery-grade cobalt sulfate refinery in Temiskaming Shores, Ontario. The brownfield facility is fully permitted and under construction, with an initial capacity of 5,120 tonnes per annum of contained cobalt, expandable to 6,500 tonnes per annum.
The company is also advancing the Iron Creek cobalt-copper project in Idaho, a modular battery recycling joint venture with Three Fires Group, and a preliminary nickel refinery study in the southeastern US. This strategy focuses on onshoring critical mineral processing to support North American EV and defense supply chains.
