Hemlo Mining Corp. Reports Underground Electrical Substation Outage; Mine-Wide Operations Continue

A substation outage interrupted Alimak ramp-up at Hemlo, while the rest of the operation continued milling.

Executive Summary

Hemlo Mining Corp. (HMMC) reported that an underground electrical substation at the Hemlo Gold Mine failed on September 4, 2026, impacting a portion of the Alimak production area on the 9765 level. No injuries were reported, and all underground personnel were safely brought to the surface.

A temporary electrical bypass has restored partial power to the affected area, allowing certain mining activities to continue at reduced capacity. Development and exploration activity in the affected area remains limited until full power is restored. The company stated that mining and processing in all other areas, including the processing plant, are unaffected. However, the outage may defer mining from certain planned stopes.

Management is evaluating alternative mine sequencing and accelerating work in other areas to maintain planned production, development, and exploration. A replacement substation was previously ordered as part of a critical spares audit, with delivery expected in December 2026 at an estimated cost of about US$250,000.

Material Impact

Hemlo Mining Corp. (HMMC) issued an operational incident release detailing an outage limited to one underground area, while the remainder of the mine reportedly continues to run normally. The immediate replacement cost for the incident is modest at approximately US$250,000; however, full power restoration may not occur until December 2026.

The primary concern is production deferral from planned Alimak stopes during the ramp-up phase, though the company has not quantified the specific tonnage or ounce impact. Because the affected area represents only a portion of the mine and management maintains multiple active mining areas alongside a 300-km underground development footprint, the event does not appear transformative.

Company Overview

Hemlo Mining Corp. is a Canadian gold producer focused on the Hemlo Gold Mine in northwestern Ontario. The mine has produced approximately 25 million ounces of gold since 1985 through underground and open-pit operations. Hemlo acquired the mine from Barrick in November 2025 for aggregate consideration up to about US$1.1 billion. The company completed an owner-operator workforce transition in Q2 2026.

The land package encompasses about 44,500 hectares within the Hemlo camp. Infrastructure includes a 1,300-metre shaft, multiple crushers, and a mill with a total capacity of about 10,000 tpd, which is currently operating well below capacity.
