Scandium Canada receives $349,000 from CSA to scale its alloy for satellite components.

Scandium Canada Ltd. announced that its subsidiary, Scalium+, is advancing the adaptation of its Scalium® aluminum-scandium alloy for space applications. The project is funded by a non-repayable contribution of $348,750 from the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) under the Space Technology Development Program.
The agreement extends through May 31, 2028, and focuses on scaling up manufacturing to produce thick plates from the alloy, which is currently produced in thin sheets, to reduce component mass and launch costs for next-generation Canadian satellites. The initiative is part of the company's broader "mine-to-alloys" strategy, targeting sectors including aeronautics, defense, transportation, and sporting goods.
The announcement follows the acquisition of Ferreol Technologies (now Scalium+) in June 2026 and confirms the continuity of the original CSA agreement signed with Ferreol in August 2025.
Scandium Canada Ltd. (SCD) received a $348,750 government R&D contribution, a development consistent with expectations for companies in the critical minerals and advanced materials sector aligned with national supply chain security goals. The funding provides validation for the company’s downstream alloy commercialization efforts but does not de-risk the upstream Crater Lake mining project or guarantee immediate revenue.
The amount does not materially alter the company’s cash position or near-term valuation. Management’s decision to postpone the pre-feasibility study (PFS) in favor of an updated Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE) and a Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) by November 2026 indicates a shift in development pacing. While management argues this approach creates greater long-term value, it introduces timeline risk and delays the path to a bankable feasibility study.
The market has already priced in the company's dual-engine strategy.
Scandium Canada Ltd. operates a dual-engine strategy focused on developing the Crater Lake scandium and rare earth project in Nunavik, Quebec, while commercializing proprietary aluminum-scandium (Al-Sc) alloys through its subsidiary, Scalium+. The Crater Lake project hosts the TG Zone, a primary scandium deposit with an NI 43-101 resource estimate effective April 2025. The deposit is 700m long, 200m deep, and remains open in all directions.
Scalium+, formerly Ferreol Technologies and acquired in June 2026, commercializes patent-pending Al-Sc alloys for additive manufacturing, welding, and aerospace applications. The alloys demonstrate strength up to 45% higher than typical AA7075 aerospace aluminum. The company is positioning itself as North America's only primary scandium source, targeting a production capacity of 91 tonnes/year of scandium oxide, supported by a planned hydrometallurgical plant in Schefferville.
