First Quantum Files NI 43-101 Technical Report for Taca Taca
First Quantum’s Argentinian Gambit: A $5.9 Billion NPV Study to Pivot from Panama Purgatory

The most recent news (February 19, 2026) is the filing of an updated NI 43-101 Technical Report for the Taca Taca copper-gold-molybdenum project in Salta Province, Argentina. The report outlines a massive improvement in project economics compared to the 2021 study. Key highlights include an after-tax NPV (8%) of $5.917 billion and an IRR of 19.3%, based on a copper price of $4.50/lb and a gold price of $3,000/oz. The project envisions an initial 35-year mine life producing an average of 209,000 tonnes of copper per annum. Total development capital is estimated at $5.25 billion, with expansion to 60 Mtpa processing capacity in year five. Approval of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) is expected in H1 2026.
The news is Material - Positive because it provides a massive valuation anchor for the company’s pipeline as it attempts to diversify away from its reliance on the stalled Cobre Panamá mine. - Valuation Leap: The NPV increased from $2.36 billion (2021) to $5.91 billion, a 150% jump. Even accounting for higher commodity price assumptions ($4.50 Cu vs previous lower levels), the reserve increase of 13% adds tangible longevity. - Strategic Pivot: With Cobre Panamá still on "Preservation and Safe Management," Taca Taca is now clearly positioned as the company’s next primary growth engine. - Financing Challenge: While the economics are robust, the $5.25 billion capex requirement is equal to the company’s entire current net debt. The material impact is tempered by the fact that First Quantum cannot fund this alone without further deleveraging or a significant project partner.
First Quantum is a global copper producer. Historically, its flagship was Cobre Panamá, one of the world's largest open-pit copper mines, which was forced into care and maintenance in late 2023 following a Supreme Court ruling in Panama. Currently, its primary operating assets are in Zambia: Kansanshi (and the new S3 expansion) and Sentinel. The Enterprise nickel mine in Zambia is also ramping up. Taca Taca is now the flagship "development" project.
