NMG Completes Acquisition of Brownfield Site in Becancour to Deploy its Active Anode Material Production for Panasonic Energy
NMG secures brownfield site to accelerate Panasonic offtake as project execution de-risking hits 50% CAPEX milestone.

The most recent news (Feb 25, 2026) announces the acquisition of a 143,000-m2 brownfield site in Bécancour, Québec. This site includes an existing 22,000-m2 facility and is contiguous to NMG’s existing greenfield land. The acquisition is designed to support a "two-stage" development plan for the Phase-2 Bécancour Battery Material Plant. Specifically, NMG will retrofit the existing building to house the first stage of production dedicated to fulfilling Panasonic Energy’s 13,000-tpa active anode material offtake. This follows the Feb 18 news where NMG awarded major construction contracts (Pomerleau, Metso, etc.) covering over 50% of the Matawinie Mine CAPEX.
The impact is Routine - Positive. While the acquisition is strategic, it represents an optimization of the existing Phase-2 plan rather than a fundamental change in the company's resource base or total offtake volume. - Risk Reduction: Utilizing a brownfield site with existing infrastructure (logistics, building shell) significantly de-risks the construction timeline and potentially lowers initial CAPEX for the refining stage. - Speed to Market: This move is specifically aimed at meeting Panasonic’s requirements more quickly, aligning the refinery commissioning with the Matawinie Mine's schedule. - Strategic Alignment: It confirms that the Panasonic offtake is the immediate priority for the refining business. However, the company is still pending a Final Investment Decision (FID), now targeted for H2-2026.
NMG is developing a fully integrated "ore-to-anode-material" source in Quebec. - Flagship Project: The Phase-2 Matawinie Mine (106ktpa graphite concentrate) and the Bécancour Battery Material Plant (44ktpa active anode material). - Status: Shovel-ready, 80% detailed engineering complete, key permits secured. - Royalties: The Matawinie Mine and Bécancour plant are subject to a Net Smelter Royalty (NSR) held by Pallinghurst (initially $1.87M value). NMG previously bought back a 0.2% NSR for $200k.
