Ivanhoe Mines Provides Clarification to Reuters' Article Announcing the Ban of Copper and Cobalt Concentrate Exports from the DRC
Ivanhoe’s DRC export ban clarification removes an overhang, though operational headwinds and cost creep persist.

Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. issued a regulatory clarification addressing a Reuters report concerning a ban on copper and cobalt concentrate exports from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The company confirmed that the ban on unbeneficiated concentrate has been enforced for nearly 10 years.
Kamoa-Kakula has operated under multiple derogations since 2021, allowing concentrate exports for on-site or Lualaba Copper Smelter processing. Additionally, the Kipushi Mine maintains an active derogation permitting zinc concentrate exports. No new financial, production, or operational data was provided in this release.
Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (IVN) issued a regulatory clarification confirming that existing derogations remain valid for its Kamoa-Kakula and Kipushi operations. While the release removes a short-term news overhang, it introduces no new financial or operational catalysts. The market has already priced in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s local value creation push and the company’s derogation status, with the stock’s recent consolidation reflecting this.
Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (IVN) operates a portfolio of assets centered on the Kamoa-Kakula copper complex in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a tier-1 project owned 39.6% by Ivanhoe, 39.6% by Zijin, and 20% by the DRC government, noted for its world-class grades and scale. The company also holds a 62% stake in the Kipushi high-grade zinc mine in the DRC, with the remaining 38% held by Gécamines, which serves as a strategic source of germanium and gallium.
In South Africa, Ivanhoe owns 64% of the Platreef project, with the balance split between a B-BBEE entity (26%) and the Itochu Consortium (10%). The asset produces platinum group metals, nickel, copper, and gold, with Phase 1 currently ramping up and Phase 2 expansion targeting annual production of more than 450,000 ounces of 3PE+Au.
Exploration activities are underway at the Western Forelands in the DRC, where Ivanhoe holds a 60–100% earn-in interest in the Makoko District, a major sedimentary copper target. Additional interests include projects in Angola (Moxico/Quando Cubango), Zambia (North-Western Province), and Kazakhstan (Chu-Sarysu Basin JV).
