Ivanhoe Mines Increases the Size of Massive Western Forelands' Copper Discovery by 30%
Ivanhoe’s Western Forelands resource update confirms guidance, highlighting early-stage optionality for the project.

Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (IVN) released a 2026 Mineral Resource estimate for the Makoko District within its Western Forelands Exploration Project in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The updated resource includes 34 million tonnes at 2.66% copper in the Indicated category and 612 million tonnes at 1.80% copper in the Inferred category.
This update marks the first application of Mineable Shape Optimization (MSO) at a 1.0% copper cut-off, utilizing practical underground mining geometries with a 4.0m minimum width. Drilling added approximately 130,000 tonnes of contained copper to Indicated resources, a 17% increase, and 2.63 million tonnes to Inferred resources, a 31% increase.
Ivanhoe plans Q4 2026 infill drilling to convert 30-40% of Inferred resources to Indicated. A scoping study is expected to commence in Q1 2027, targeting a mix of open pits and underground operations that leverage adjacent Kamoa-Kakula infrastructure.
Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (IVN) released a resource update that serves as a strategic validation of the Western Forelands play, though it carries no near-term financial or production impact. The update confirms management’s explicit promise of greater than 30% growth, reinforcing credibility on the exploration front. The resource is heavily Inferred at 612 Mt and relies on a 1.0% cut-off with MSO; conversion to Indicated and eventual reserve status will take years.
Market reaction was muted because the greater than 30% growth was explicitly guided for September 2026. The stock has traded in a $9.81–$18.81 range over the past year, with recent consolidation around $11.50–$12.50.
Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (IVN) operates the Kamoa-Kakula copper project in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Kipushi zinc project in the DRC, and the Platreef platinum group metals project in South Africa. The company’s exploration portfolio extends to the Western Forelands in the DRC, as well as projects in Angola, Zambia, and Kazakhstan.
Ownership structures vary by asset. At Kamoa-Kakula, Ivanhoe holds a 39.6% stake, matched by Zijin’s 39.6%, with the DRC government holding the remaining 20%. For the Kipushi project, Ivanhoe owns 62% and Gécamines owns 38%. At Platreef, Ivanhoe holds 64%, the B-BBEE group holds 26%, and Itochu holds 10%. The company maintains a strategic focus on critical minerals to meet demand from the energy transition and AI/datacenter sectors.
