NMG Awards Key Construction Contracts for the Phase-2 Matawinie Mine Ahead of FID
Nouveau Monde Locks In Construction Costs For Half Of Flagship Capex As Final Investment Decision Looms

The most recent news release (February 18, 2026) announces that Nouveau Monde Graphite (NMG) has awarded major construction contracts for its Phase-2 Matawinie Mine. These contracts represent over 50% of the project's total Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) and, crucially, fall within the estimates provided in the 2025 Updated Feasibility Study. Key partners include Pomerleau for construction management, a First Nations joint venture (Manawan-Fournier) for civil works, Beauce Atlas for steel, and Metso for processing equipment. The project is described as "shovel-ready" with 80% of detailed engineering complete and all key permits secured.
This news is Material - Positive. From a risk-management perspective, NMG has addressed one of the most significant threats to large-scale mining projects: cost overruns during the transition from feasibility to construction. By locking in over half of the project's CAPEX with top-tier contractors before the Final Investment Decision (FID), management has created a pricing "envelope" that provides much-needed certainty for lenders.
However, the "Material - Game Changer" rating is withheld because the project still lacks the final $1.2B+ financing package required to commence full construction. While these contracts are a necessary precursor to securing that debt, the company remains in a "pre-FID" holding pattern. The use of shares to pay interest (as seen in the Jan 2026 and Oct 2025 releases) signals that cash preservation remains a priority, despite the US$20 million raise in December 2025.
Nouveau Monde Graphite is developing a fully integrated "ore-to-anode" graphite operation in Quebec, Canada. - Flagship Project: The Phase-2 Matawinie Mine (106,000 tpa concentrate) and the Bécancour Battery Material Plant (43,000 tpa active anode material). - Integrated Model: The project aims to be carbon-neutral, using Hydro-Quebec's grid and an all-electric mining fleet provided by Caterpillar. - Status: Shovel-ready, pending FID and full project financing.
