Mkango Magnetic Materials Limited Announces HyProMag USA Pre-Feasibility Study
HyProMag USA’s PFS validates a $2 billion expansion platform despite delays to its Texas hub.

Mkango Magnetic Materials Ltd. announced the completion of an independent Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) for HyProMag USA LLC, which evaluates a three-plant phased expansion of its U.S. rare earth magnet manufacturing platform. The study targets total salable material production of approximately 6,000 metric tons per year by 2034, representing a fourfold increase over the initial Northlake Texas Facility capacity.
Economics for the three new plants, excluding the existing Northlake facility, show a post-tax net present value (NPV) of US$1,854 million to US$2,062 million, with a post-tax internal rate of return (IRR) of 31% to 36%, based on capital costs of US$623 million to US$656 million. The initial Northlake Texas Facility NPV was updated to approximately US$723 million, a reduction from the US$797 million reported in June 2026, attributed to later construction timing, higher capital costs, and updated operating assumptions. Phase 1 commissioning for the Northlake facility is now targeted for mid-2028.
The combined platform value, encompassing the Northlake facility and the three new plants, is estimated at US$2.6 billion to US$2.8 billion. The release highlights feedstock flexibility using both recycled and primary sources, low-carbon production at approximately 2.35 kg CO2-eq/kg, and ongoing customer validation for U.S. offtake.
Mkango Resources Ltd. (MKA) released a pre-feasibility study (PFS) that follows up on the June 2026 detailed design and economics update, confirming the scalability of the HyProMag USA business model. The study highlights strong expansion economics, with a net present value (NPV) ranging from $1.85 billion to $2.06 billion and an internal rate of return (IRR) of 31-36%, supporting the company's pivot toward downstream magnet manufacturing.
However, the initial Northlake facility's NPV has been reduced from $797 million to $723 million, and the commissioning timeline has shifted from the second half of 2027 to mid-2028. This delay pushes first revenue further out, extending the cash burn period and introducing near-term execution risk. The news is expected and incremental, aligning with previously disclosed expansion concept studies, and does not contain genuinely new, unexpected catalysts.
Mkango Resources Ltd. has shifted its operational focus from primary raw material development to becoming a downstream player in the rare earth supply chain, specifically targeting magnet recycling and manufacturing. The company’s flagship initiative is HyProMag USA LLC, a 50:50 joint venture with CoTec Holdings Corp. This project aims to establish a rare earth magnet recycling and manufacturing hub in the Dallas-Fort Worth area of Texas, utilizing patented Hydrogen Processing of Magnet Scrap (HPMS) technology.
Beyond its U.S. operations, Mkango Resources Ltd. holds additional assets including HyProMag facilities in Birmingham, UK, and Pforzheim, Germany. The company also controls the Songwe Hill rare earths project in Malawi and the Pulawy separation plant in Poland. These upstream assets have received designations under the EU Critical Raw Materials Act. The company plans to list these upstream assets on Nasdaq under the ticker MKAR as part of its strategy to build a domestic U.S. magnet supply chain.
