Gunnison Copper Recognized by Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs for Job Creation at Johnson Camp

Gunnison secured a $2m credit and faces a $1.5bn capex gap as the JCM project ramps up.

Executive Summary

Gunnison Copper Corp. (GCU) announced that CEO Craig Hallworth and "People First Leader" Alex Bovell met with Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs to recognize the company’s approval under the Arizona Commerce Authority's Qualified Facility Tax Credit (QFTC) Program. The approval was initially announced on May 27, 2026, and the latest release quantifies the associated financial benefits. The company reported the creation of 81 qualifying jobs in the 2025 tax year, with US$1.62 million in refundable tax credits expected in the fourth quarter of 2026. Additionally, 19 jobs are projected for the 2026 tax year, generating US$0.38 million in expected credits in the fourth quarter of 2027. The total program value is US$2.0 million, based on 100 jobs at the Johnson Camp site.

The release included standard corporate information regarding the flagship Gunnison resource, which contains 846 million tonnes of measured and indicated resources grading 0.33% copper for 5.19 billion pounds, as well as the Strong & Harris inferred resource of 76 million tonnes at 0.49% copper. It also referenced the March 2026 preliminary economic assessment, which indicated a net present value at an 8% discount rate of US$2 billion, an internal rate of return of 23%, and a payback period of 3.9 years. No production, cost, AISC, cash-flow, or balance-sheet data was disclosed, nor were any drilling results or guidance changes announced.

The release described Johnson Camp as "producing copper cathode" but did not provide tonnage figures. Readers must refer to the September 22, 2026 release for specific production data, which reported 1,304,448 pounds for August and 894,767 pounds for the period of September 1–17. Furthermore, the release framed the QFTC as part of "Gunnison's growing track record of government support," despite the company having previously abandoned the larger DOE 48C credit.

Material Impact

Gunnison Copper Corp. (GCU) provided incremental details regarding the Queen’s Foretold Technical Certificate (QFTC) approval, which was originally announced on May 27, 2026. The updated information specifies the cash timing of US$1.62 million in the fourth quarter of 2026 and US$0.38 million in the fourth quarter of 2027, alongside a job count of 81 in 2025 and 19 additional positions in 2026.

The total non-dilutive cash of US$2.0 million represents approximately 1.2% of the company’s current market capitalization of roughly US$178 million. Against the US$2.0 billion pre-feasibility study net present value at an 8% discount rate, this amount is immaterial. The release does not alter the mine life, grade, throughput, capital expenditure, or funding requirements.

Market reaction to the commercial production release, which occurred on September 21, 2026, saw the stock move from C$0.46 to C$0.49 on September 22, a 6.5% increase. This movement was driven by the commercial production item rather than the QFTC affirmation. A governor’s recognition with US$2 million attached is not expected to significantly impact the C$248 million market capitalization. Any large move in the following session would likely be attributed to the commercial production news rather than today’s release.

Additionally, the 48C election on September 16, 2026, which resulted in a decision not to proceed, is considered more material than the QFTC update.

Company Overview

Gunnison Copper Corp. (TSX: GCU; OTCQB: GCUMF; FSE: 3XS0) is a pure-play copper producer and developer controlling the Cochise Mining District in the Southern Arizona Copper Belt, stated to contain 12 known deposits within an 8 km economic radius.

The company’s flagship Gunnison Copper Project is 100% owned and features an open-pit, heap-leach, SX/EW operation producing finished cathode on site with a direct rail link. The project holds Measured and Indicated resources of 846 Mt at 0.33% total Cu (5.19 Blb) plus an Inferred resource of 94 Mt at 0.21% Cu (~397 Mlb). A Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) effective 18 March 2026 projects an after-tax NPV8% of ~US$1.96–2.0 billion, an IRR of 22.5–23%, and a payback period of 3.9 years. The mine has a 21-year life of mine, producing an average of 174 Mlb/yr of cathode over years 1–15, for a total LOM production of 3.2 Blb. The LOM AISC is estimated at US$2.05/lb, with initial capital of US$1,556 million, expansion capital of US$682 million, and sustaining capital of US$587 million. First production is guided for 2030 in the accelerated case or 2032 in the base case. There are no mineral reserves.

The Strong & Harris satellite deposit contains an Inferred resource of 76 Mt at 0.49% total Cu (0.32% CuOx) at a 0.07% cut-off, with zinc (0.56%, 856 Mlb) and silver (0.12 oz/t, 9.0 moz) credits. Located approximately 1.9 miles from the planned Gunnison processing facilities, it is included in the mine plan.

The Johnson Camp Mine (JCM) is in production, fully funded by Nuton LLC, a Rio Tinto venture, with a nameplate capacity of up to 25 Mlb/yr of finished cathode. ROM oxide production began in August 2025, with the first sale occurring in September 2025. Nuton sulphide leach production began in December 2025, and commercial production was declared in September 2026. There are no mineral reserves.

Other district deposits, including South Star plus eight others, are positioned as potential satellite feeder deposits. By-products include high-purity limestone and cement sold into regional markets. Approximately 224 Mt of limestone is currently scheduled as waste over the mine plan, with ~96% of sampled material meeting cement/agricultural lime thresholds and ~21% meeting premium filler/paint criteria.
