Nearly 3 Million Ounces of Century-Old Silver. Ontario Just Opened the Door.
Electra Battery Materials faces Nasdaq compliance risks and cash burn concerns that threaten its 2027 refinery commissioning timeline.

Electra Battery Materials Corporation has appointed Peter Rawlins as Chief Financial Officer, effective August 26, 2026, succeeding Interim CFO David Allen. The appointment follows a broader recapitalization in October 2025 that converted approximately US$40 million of senior secured convertible notes into equity and secured approximately US$82 million in aggregate funding.
The company also reported its Q2 2026 financials, highlighting C$36 million in cash and cash equivalents as of June 30, 2026. Additionally, a definitive C$20 million investment agreement was secured from the Government of Canada under the Strategic Response Fund.
Construction of the Ontario cobalt sulfate refinery remains on schedule and on budget, with early commissioning targeted for Q4 2026 and commercial production for Q4 2027.
Electra Battery Materials Corporation (ELBM) released news that confirms its stated execution timeline and capital position. The update does not introduce new market-moving information but rather validates prior guidance regarding construction progress and government funding.
The company also announced a CFO transition. Rawlins brings a background in mining finance and capital markets, which is favorable for navigating the upcoming commissioning phase and potential capital raises.
Electra Battery Materials reported a Q2 cash balance of C$36 million, providing near-term liquidity. However, the company’s Q1 MD&A flagged a going concern uncertainty due to anticipated commissioning costs of approximately C$20 million and potential working capital needs. The new C$20 million government funding mitigates this risk temporarily but does not eliminate the need for disciplined cash management.
Additionally, a Nasdaq minimum bid price deficiency notice remains an overhang, with a deadline of September 14, 2026. This requirement caps upside potential regardless of operational progress.
Electra Battery Materials Corporation (ELBM) is constructing North America's first battery-grade cobalt sulfate refinery in Temiskaming Shores, Ontario. The facility represents a fully permitted brownfield expansion with an initial nameplate capacity of 5,120 tonnes per annum (tpa) of cobalt sulfate, which is expandable to 6,500 tpa.
Feedstock is sourced from established producers including Glencore and ERG, while the company continues metallurgical testing of domestic North American sources such as Iron Creek in Idaho. A long-term tolling agreement with LG Energy Solution secures 60% of production through 2029, with an extension option to 2032.
Additionally, the company is advancing a feasibility study for a modular battery recycling facility and a potential nickel sulfate refinery in the southeastern United States.
