Equinox Gold Receives Positive Record of Decision for South Railroad; Significant Permitting Milestone Unlocks Next North American Growth Project
Equinox’s South Railroad ROD clears the path to 2028 despite lingering cost creep and integration risks.

Equinox Gold Corp. (EQX) has received a positive Record of Decision (ROD) from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management for its South Railroad project in Nevada. This approval completes federal NEPA permitting, a milestone that unlocks early works construction and allows the company to proceed with state permit applications.
Engineering on the project is now 55.2% complete, with major equipment contracts already awarded. Mining equipment is scheduled to arrive by year-end, paving the way for initial mining operations to begin in spring 2027. First gold production is targeted for 2028, with an expected average of 130,000 ounces annually over the first five years and over 100,000 ounces over the initial 10-year mine life.
Initial capital costs are estimated at $395 million, with $70–$80 million allocated to the project in the 2026 guidance. The South Railroad project contributes to the company’s objective of adding 800,000 ounces of annual gold production from its organic development pipeline.
Equinox Gold Corp. (EQX) identified the South Railroad ROD as a telegraphed milestone, with an investor presentation targeted for Q3 2026. The company stated that this development does not alter its 2026 production or cost guidance, nor does it trigger immediate cash flow. The market has already priced in the Orla merger and Q2 results.
Equinox Gold Corp. (EQX) is a North American-focused gold producer that completed its merger with Orla Mining in July 2026. The company’s portfolio comprises seven operating mines and projects located across Canada, the USA, Mexico, and Nicaragua.
